Proper Foundations – What the New Era at Sheffield Wednesday Reminds Us About Power Systems

Yesterday I wrote about meeting Sheffield Wednesday’s new owner David Storch and CEO David Bruce. It was a genuine highlight after years of uncertainty at the club.
What stood out most was the clear focus on foundations. Not just signing players or making big promises, but putting the basic infrastructure right – the stadium, the training ground, the day-to-day running of the club. The message was simple: get the basics solid first, then build from there.
That approach resonates strongly with the work we do at GES Power.
Cutting Corners Always Costs More Later
In football, years of neglect eventually catch up with you. The same is true with power systems.
We regularly visit sites where the existing ATS panel or generator arrangement was chosen primarily on price. At the time it probably seemed like a sensible saving. A few years later the problems appear: nuisance tripping on minor voltage dips, poor clearances, inadequate protection, difficulty getting parts, or simply a system that no longer matches the site’s real load.
Just like a football club that puts off essential maintenance, the eventual bill – in downtime, lost production, or emergency call-outs – is almost always higher than doing it properly in the first place.
Building It Right From the Start
Whether it’s a high-specification motorised changeover panel, a correctly sized standby generator, or a full maintenance package, our approach is the same as the one the new ownership seems to be taking at Hillsborough:
Understand the real requirements
Specify quality equipment that will last
Install it properly
Support it for the long term
It’s not always the cheapest option on day one. But it is almost always the most reliable – and the most cost-effective over the life of the system.
Loyalty Works Both Ways
As a Wednesdayite who goes home and away, I’ve stuck with the club through some very difficult seasons. That loyalty only makes sense if the people in charge are committed to building something sustainable.
The same applies to our customers. We want long-term relationships based on trust and performance, not one-off sales. When a business invests in a proper power solution with us, we treat that commitment seriously – with quality work, honest advice, and support when it’s needed.
The new era at Sheffield Wednesday feels like a chance to rebuild properly. In our own small way, that’s exactly what we aim to help our customers do with their critical power systems.
Up the Owls – and here’s to solid foundations, on and off the pitch.
