First, the structure — not the generator
You do not land several tonnes of plant on a historic roof and hope the joists agree.
A structural engineer was brought in to calculate the loads: the wet weight of the set, the frame, fuel in the belly tank, access steel, wind, and point loads through the existing structure. Only when those numbers were sound did we design and build a frame from I-beams to take the generator. The set sits on that frame, not on the roof covering.
Going the extra mile on a job like this is not a slogan. It is a walkway and access steps around the machine so engineers can service filters, belts and controls without climbing over a live generator or stepping on fragile roof finishes. If you cannot maintain it safely, you have not finished the install.

Closing the road, then the lift
The set would not walk up the stairs.
We obtained a permit to close the road so a crane could lift the generator onto the frame. That means traffic management, a timed window, banksmen, a lifting plan, and a building that still has to look like itself when the wagon leaves. One clean lift. No second chance to scrape a cornice or drop a load over a London pavement.

Fuel from the basement to the roof — and back again in an emergency
The generator on the roof still needs diesel. A bulk fuel tank went in the basement. A fill-point cabinet was installed at street level so tankers can deliver without coming into the building. Pipework then runs from the basement up to the set, routed and finished so it belongs to the building rather than hanging off it.
Two systems matter as much as the tank itself.
When the generator belly tank drops, an automatic filling system draws from the basement bulk tank and tops the set up. The machine is not dependent on someone remembering a jerry can on the sixth floor.
If there is a fire risk at the set, a thermal link opens a dump valve. Fuel in the belly tank is dumped down to a dump tank in the basement, away from the heat. That is not an accessory. It is how you stop a roof-mounted belly tank becoming part of the incident.
Making it disappear into the building
A traditional London elevation does not want a generator that looks like a shipping container parked on the ridge.
The frame, walkway, steps, flue, fill cabinet and pipework were designed so the system does not stick out like a sore thumb. You see the architecture first. The standby plant is there when the IT estate needs it, not as a second building on top of the first.
Why this job is the job
Worldwide IT does not care that the office is handsome. It cares that the set starts, takes load, has fuel, and can be shut down safely if the roof is the wrong place to keep diesel in a fire.
Restricted space, a roof only a structural engineer could sign, a road closure, a basement tank, street fill, auto-replenish, emergency dump, and a finish that respects the building: that is the difference between “we dropped a generator on the roof” and a sensitive installation for a company that cannot afford a dark screen.
