Generator Installation Done Properly — Survey, Set, ATS, Exhaust, Commission
Plenty of companies will sell you a generator. Fewer will take responsibility for the whole job: the load, the room, the exhaust, the changeover, the cables and the day it has to start.
That is the work we do at GES Power.
A standby system is not a machine on a pad. It is a chain. Get one link wrong — undersized set, contactor ATS, tails that do not match the breaker, no air, no exhaust calculation — and the chain fails on the first real cut.
What we actually install

New sets and replacements
Industrial, supported machines — Caterpillar, Volvo, Yanmar and Perkins-based sets we will still answer for in five years. Prime or standby. Canopy, plant room or container. We remove the old one when it is finished.
The load, not a guess
We survey. Essential load, shedable load, starting currents. Sprinkler locked rotor, AOVs punching on, lifts, refrigeration. Running amps on a spreadsheet is how life safety jobs get sized too small. We have picked those jobs up after someone else “quoted a kVA.”
ATS we build and stand behind
Motorised switch changeover, including BS 8519:2020 bypass panels for life safety and fire-fighting supplies. Not unbranded contactors in a box. We have turned batches of compliant panels for residential developments that had been given the wrong product.
Mechanical
Positioning, plinth, fuel, twin-wall insulated exhaust flue systems with route and size calculated so the engine is not fighting back pressure. Inlet and outlet attenuation, with or without weather louvres — fresh air in, hot air out, rain kept out, noise kept down. A hole in the wall with a cheap grille is not a ventilation design.
Electrical
Cables matched to the protective device. A 200 A supply in trunking is 95 mm² 6181Y, not whatever is on the van. Generator feeders checked against the MCCB on the set. Glands, shrouds, CPC.
Lift, connect, commission
Delivery, crane, connection, load test, transfer test, demonstration, documents.
Servicing, maintenance and repairs
A set that is never looked at is a set that will not start. We service and maintain generators on a planned schedule, and we repair them when they do not. Filters, belts, batteries, coolant, controllers, leak-downs — the work that decides whether the machine runs on the night the mains goes.
Fuel polishing and fluid analysis
Diesel sits. Water, bugs and sludge sit with it. We polish fuel and we sample oil, coolant and fuel so you find a problem in a bottle, not in a failed start. Especially on sets that run few hours a year.
Loadbank tests
A weekly no-load run proves the engine turns. It does not prove it will carry the building. We loadbank so the set, the AVR and the cooling are tested at real kW, not at tickover.
Black start / blackout tests
The only test that matters is: mains off, ATS transfers, lights stay on, pumps start. We plan and carry out blackout tests so you know — not hope.
How a job runs
Site survey — load, access, noise, fuel, ATS location, cable routes
Design — set, panel, exhaust, attenuation, programme
Install — mechanical and electrical as one job
Commission and handover
Service, loadbank and blackout tests through the life of the machine
Our people, not a string of subcontractors
The engineers who survey you are the ones who come back to install and commission. Trained, friendly, experienced and tidy — and they work for GES Power. We do not farm the job out to whoever is free that week, which is how a lot of our competitors run. One company, one standard, someone who still cares about the plant room when the van is packed.
Who it is for
Food plants and cold stores. Rural commercial sites. Office-to-residential conversions that suddenly need life safety power. Clubs and industrial units that have already found out the mains is not guaranteed. Anywhere the first power cut should be boring.
We are based in Chesterfield and we work nationwide. If you have drawings, an existing set, or a quote that only added up running current, send it. We will tell you whether it will work.
