Hush next to the Dominion: a quiet roof set, and how you actually load-bank it
An office block near the Dominion Theatre does not get a second chance on noise. When the West End is full and the mains goes down, the last thing the building needs is a generator that sounds like a wagon parked on the roof. The brief was standby power with hush — a set that would start, take the load, and stay whisper-quiet.
The machine as supplied was not that quiet. The answer was not a polite acoustic enclosure from a catalogue. We designed and built a drop-over canopy around the noisy generator, with automatic louvres, then lifted the whole package into position and installed it.

Why a drop-over canopy
A standard canopy is built around a set in a factory. A drop-over is designed for the job in front of you: the roof, the neighbours, the airflow the engine actually needs, and the noise limit the building has to live with.
Automatic louvres sit closed when the set is at rest so you are not looking at an open box on the skyline. They open with the engine so cooling air can move. Get that wrong and you either cook the radiator or you leave a hole in the acoustic envelope. The canopy was designed so the set could breathe and still drop to a whisper instead of broadcasting across Tottenham Court Road.
Then it had to go on the roof. That means a lift plan, a crane, and a canopy that can be dropped over and fixed without turning the install into a week of on-site fabrication in the wind.
The question nobody asks until the crane has gone
A quiet install is only half the job. Standby sets sit at low or no load for most of the year. Annual load-bank testing is not a luxury. It does two things:
(a) it proves the set will take the load when the mains fails
(b) it burns out the unburnt fuel and carbon that collect when a diesel spends its life lightly loaded — wet stacking by another name
So here is the question for every roof-mounted generator in a tight London plot:
How do you expect professional installers and maintainers to load-bank a generator when space on the roof is already gone?Where do you put the load bank?How do you get a load bank onto the roof when the crane that placed the set has long since left?Or do you drape heavy cables through a window or over the side of the building and hope nobody on the pavement minds?
That is not a maintenance detail. That is a design failure if you ignore it at install.
Load-bank connection point panels
We fit load-bank connection point panels so the test set can be plugged in at a sensible place — typically at street or plant-room level — instead of manhandling a load bank onto a finished roof or hanging cables down the elevation.

If the building is next to the Dominion, the generator has to be quiet when it runs for real. It also has to be testable every year without closing a road twice. Design the hush. Design the connection. Then the set is a system, not a noisy box you cannot prove.
