HVO Fuel for Diesel Generators: Is It Worth Switching in 2026?

With rising fuel costs, stricter environmental targets, and increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, many UK businesses are asking the same question: Should we switch our diesel generator to HVO fuel?

At GES Power, we’re getting more enquiries about HVO than ever before. Here’s a clear, practical breakdown to help you decide.

What Is HVO?

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable diesel made from waste oils, fats, and residues. Unlike traditional biodiesel, HVO is chemically very similar to fossil diesel, making it a true “drop-in” replacement.

Can You Use HVO Without Modifications?

Yes — especially if you have a modern Perkins engine (or most other major brands). Perkins officially approves up to 100% HVO (EN 15940 standard) for the majority of their engines with no modifications required. You can switch straight over.

Key Benefits of Running HVO

1. Massive CO₂ Reduction Up to 90% lower fossil carbon emissions compared to regular diesel, depending on the source of the HVO.

2. Cleaner Engine Operation

  • Less soot and carbon buildup

  • Potentially longer service intervals

  • Reduced particulate emissions

3. Drop-in Compatibility No need for engine conversions, new injectors, or special seals in most cases.

4. Excellent Cold Weather Performance HVO has better cold flow properties than standard diesel, making it reliable even in winter.

5. Good Storage Stability HVO stores better than biodiesel and is less prone to microbial growth.

Are There Any Downsides?

  • Slightly Higher Cost — HVO is currently more expensive than regular diesel (though the gap is narrowing and government incentives can help).

  • Slightly Higher Fuel Consumption — Usually only 1–2% higher due to lower energy density.

  • Availability — Improving rapidly, but not as widespread as regular diesel yet.

Who Should Consider Switching to HVO?

HVO is particularly attractive for:

  • Food processors and cold storage facilities

  • Farms and agricultural sites

  • Councils and public sector organisations

  • Companies with net-zero or ESG targets

  • Anyone wanting to future-proof their generator

Our Recommendation

If you already have a modern diesel generator (especially with a Perkins engine), switching to HVO is one of the easiest and most effective ways to significantly reduce your carbon footprint with minimal hassle.

Many of our customers are now specifying HVO-compatible generators for new installations or running HVO in their existing sets.
