To Me, To You — Moving a Generator Across a Car Park (Because of the EV Chargers)

If the Chuckle Brothers had gone into standby power instead of slapstick, the catchphrase would still have been the same.

To me. To you.

That was this week’s job, minus the ladder and the “oh dear, oh dear.”

A generator had been sat in the car park of a residential development for years. Doing its job. Minding its own business. Nobody had asked it to move house. Then the site needed electric car charging points, and the set was suddenly in the way — like a relative who picked the best armchair and then the sofa had to go in.

So the generator had to come out, go across the car park, and be put back together on the other side. Same machine. New postcode, roughly twelve parking bays that way.

To me…

Disconnect. Isolate. Cables, control, exhaust, fuel, plinth — all the bits that make a “set in a car park” into an actual installation. You do not just kick the chocks and hope it rolls.

…to you

New position. Reinstall. Reconnect. Prove it still starts and still transfers. Because moving it is the easy sentence. Making sure it is a generator again, and not a very expensive ornament next to a Type 2 socket, is the work.

We will admit there was a moment where “to me, to you” felt optimistic. Generators do not fold. They do not help. They sit there with the same expression Paul Chuckle had when Barry handed him the other end of something heavy.

Still: it went. Other side of the car park. Chargers can go in. Residents can plug the car in without reversing into a canopy.

It does not have to be “our” generator

Worth saying, because people assume otherwise.

We will work on anybody’s generator. We do not need to have sold it. We do not need to have installed it ten years ago. If it is on your site, it will not start, it needs moving, servicing, an ATS, a flue, or a new home because the architects have discovered EV chargers — call us.

Box-shifted, inherited, “the last contractor left it like that,” Cat, Perkins, Volvo, Yanmar, or a machine with a badge we have not seen since 2009. If it is a generator and it needs an engineer, that is the job.

The Chuckle Brothers moved sofas. We move 110 kVA. Same principle. Slightly less studio laughter. Slightly more load testing.

If your set is in the way of the future — or just in the way — we will take it to me, and put it back to you, working.
