When the Lights Flicker and the Trains Stop: A 90-Second Power Blip That Rattled the Rails

Yesterday afternoon, a brief power outage in the Ardwick area of Manchester reminded everyone just how fragile “business as usual” can be. A transformer fault knocked out electricity for around 5,000 customers for roughly 90 seconds. Most homes and businesses shrugged it off. Network Rail’s Manchester Rail Operating Centre did not.

That short interruption hit the signalling and control systems hard. Backup arrangements took longer than hoped to step in, trains across the North West and into the Midlands ground to a halt, and thousands of passengers spent the rest of the day (and into Friday) dealing with cancellations, delays and the classic British experience of standing on a platform wondering if the next train exists. Network Rail has apologised and is investigating why the expected seamless recovery didn’t happen. Fair enough.

We’re not here to point fingers or claim we know the exact setup at that particular centre. Critical national infrastructure is complicated, and details of individual installations are rightly not public. What we can say, from three decades of designing, supplying, installing, commissioning, servicing and repairing standby power systems, is that these kinds of “it should have been fine… but it wasn’t” moments are exactly why proper backup power exists.

Design first, then everything else

A well-designed standby system doesn’t just sit there looking important. It starts with understanding the real load, the acceptable transfer time, redundancy needs, fuel strategy, and how the whole lot talks to the building’s existing infrastructure. Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), control panels, battery systems, remote monitoring and proper segregation of critical circuits all matter. Get the design right and a 90-second grid blip becomes a non-event for the systems that keep people and operations safe.

There’s nothing quite like watching a generator sit there for months looking bored, then fire up in a couple of seconds when the lights go out. That’s the point.

Servicing and repairs – the unglamorous bit that keeps you out of the news

Generators are like any other critical plant: ignore them and they will eventually return the favour. Batteries age, fuel goes off, coolant levels drop, control firmware needs attention, and load-bank tests prove the set can still deliver its rated output. Regular servicing, fuel polishing, battery health checks and periodic full-load testing are what turn “we have a generator” into “we have a generator that will actually work when the grid doesn’t.”
